Irritable Bowel and Inflammatory Bowel? Try Ayurveda, A Success Story…

There are different classifications and names for a group of intestinal diseases / syndromes like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis and so on. Of course, pathologically they are different from origin, development, causes, findings etc. However, interestingly, they have some common features as well.

Common features can be indigestion, gas bloating, frequent passing of bowels and general feeling of tiredness and lethargy. Apart from this based on the variety of the intestinal problem, there can be mucus mixed, pus mixed and / or blood mixed stool and abdominal pain. Weight loss and muscle wasting may be observed due to improper digestion and mal-absorption.

What is told in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda considers ‘Agni’, the digestive fire, to be the prime factor in almost all of the diseases, which is 100% true in case of the above mentioned conditions, let us call them ‘Intestinal Disorders (ID)’ for our convenience now.

Agni is directly and badly affected in all the above said ID’s. It may be the seat of Agni or the functions of Agni. Mal functioning of Agni can result in improper digestion, improper gut movement or improper absorption. It can turn in to a vicious cycle of malfunctioning of Agni and vitiation of the digestive system. Thus, it becomes chronic, deep seated and affects multiple tissues and systems in due course.

This has been explained in Ayurvedic classics under Grahani dosha‘, vitiation of the seat of Agni. Different variations of the same have been explained with various treatment modalities.

Ayurvedic Remedy

Ayurveda believes in treating the person rather than the organ or the disease alone. A combination of proper diet, herbo-mineral formulae, internal and external cleansing procedures (eg: medicated enemas) and certain lifestyle changes will make a big difference by giving wonderful results.

In my experience, I have seen good results in ulcerative colitis and IBS by a suitable combination of above said measures.

Note: Remember to consult a qualified Ayurvedic expert before going for any of the remedies.
